Research & Innovation
As a current Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute Clinical Affiliate, Dr. Jonathan Sen’s research aims to improve cardiovascular care by developing better tools for risk prediction and personalised treatment. He believes that insights from rigorous research should directly inform clinical practice.
“Working at the intersection of clinical practice and research allows me to identify clinically meaningful questions and translate findings into patient care. This bidirectional relationship—from bedside to bench and back—drives my work as a cardiologist.”

Impact of Dr. Sen’s Research
Every study, grant, and conference presentation listed is pursued with a patient‑centered goal: to turn the newest scientific insights into safer, more precise, and more personalised heart‑care today. When research moves from the lab to the clinic, patients benefit from:
Earlier, more accurate diagnoses – big data‑driven risk models spot trouble before symptoms appear.
Tailored treatment choices – Multi‑modal data integration matches the right therapy to each patient’s unique biology, avoiding one‑size‑fits‑all approaches.
Safer interventions – Better phenotyping of aortic‑stenosis and cardio‑oncology toxicity guides exactly when (and when not) to intervene, reducing unnecessary procedures.
Continuous quality improvement – Rigorous data‑quality checks ensure that the AI tools guiding decisions are trustworthy and reliable.
Key Research Areas
Cardio-Oncology Research
AI models for cardiovascular risk prediction in cancer patients
Immune checkpoint inhibitor myocarditis
Multi-omics approaches including genomics and polygenic risk scores
During my fellowship at the University Health Network in Toronto, I conducted research focused on improving risk prediction and diagnostic accuracy in cardio-oncology, including evaluating a structured educational program to standardise echocardiographic strain measurement for detecting cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction, and contributing to state-of-the-art reviews on cardiovascular risk prediction (JACC:CO 2026) and immune checkpoint inhibitor myocarditis (CJC 2026).
AI and Machine Learning in Cardiovascular Medicine
Machine learning for cardiovascular risk stratification
Machine learning for cardiovascular risk stratification
Big data analytics in cardiology
Multi-modal data integration
Data quality assessment in medical AI
My research identified significant data quality issues in echocardiography databases that can affect AI model validity (JASE 2023). This work highlights the importance of rigorous data assessment before deploying AI in clinical decision support.
Aortic Stenosis Phenotyping
Prognostic phenotypes in moderate aortic stenosis
Low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis characterisation
Integration of clinical, comorbidity, and echocardiographic data
My doctoral thesis, ‘Myocardial Phenotyping and Precision Medicine in Aortic Stenosis,’ developed and validated machine learning-derived phenotypes to predict outcomes in aortic stenosis. This work demonstrated that comorbidity burden is a major driver of adverse outcomes, which has implications for treatment decisions.
